Community Outreach
Terry Fox
The Summerland Montessori participates in the annual Terry Fox Run. The Montessori school has been a supporter since 2003 and involves the entire school. Last year the Grade 4/5's ran from Mile 0, in Victoria, to dip their toes in the Pacific Ocean where Terry would have finished his historic run. This is an event that involves the entrie school community, staff and parents.
Heart and Stroke Foundation
The Summerland Montessori School proudly displays its 5 year banner for participation in the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Jump Rope for Heart Programs. To date the Summerland Montessori School has raised over $10,000.00 for this very worthy foundation and has incorporated jump rope into its physical education program. This is another event which involves the entire school community, staff and parent volunteers. Many of the learned rope tricks become part of our annual talent show!
Extended Care Visits
The Summerland Montessori School is very active in the outside community. One way in which the school shows its support is with visits to the local care homes. A few times a year the students visit the care homes to sing songs, play games and put on plays for the elderly. This program is very well received by both the elderly and the children.
Action Fest
Every year you will see the brightly coloured float the Summerland Montessori School displays in the annual parade. Last year the Summerland Montessori school placed 2nd in the "Best Float" category! Everyone enjoys decorating and either riding on or walking beside the float!
Recycling
The Summerland Montessori School is part of the Summerland/Africa Friendship Connection. The students participate by recycling all drink containers and donating the money to Tanzania. So far the students have raised over $340.00 to send to Africa! The first $100.00 was used to purchase a bicycle for a family and the rest will go to local orphanages to purchase items they need to help keep the orphanage viable. For example; one of the items the orphanage needs is Dairy Goats and the money the Summerland Montessori School students helped raise will aid in the purchase of the goats.
Earth Day
Every year the Summerland Montessori School does its part to participate in Earth Day. This annual event is a day full of planting tress and flowers, cleaning the yard, creek and surrounding area. The teachers use the week proceeding Earth Day to create lessons and posters showing the Summerland Montessori School's support. Parent volunteers help to plant trees and flowers and participate in the clean up.
