Kindergarten / Grade One Teacher

Summerland Montessori School is a non-profit independent school nestled in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in Summerland, British Columbia, just north of Penticton and within commuting distance of Kelowna to Oliver. Summerland Montessori School is a multi-age school, featuring small class sizes, ranging from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Summerland Montessori School is known for play-based learning, our strong sense of community, lots of outdoor fun, a collaborative culture, a commitment to professional development for our team, and meeting students where they are with their individual learning. The school has an AIM French program that students learn from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. 
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated K/Grade One Teacher. Our ideal candidates will have experience teaching elementary grades and an understanding of the Primary Program: A Framework for Teaching and the BC Early Learning Framework; developmental levels of children aged 4-10. Our school faculty has experience with the following training or certifications:
  • Montessori
  • hands on learning
  • Reggio (play based learning)

This is an annual contract positions, contract renewals are offered to qualified candidates at the end of each school year.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Setting up and running a split Kindergarten / Grade One classroom
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support the development of an inquiry-based, Montessori-focused approach to teaching and learning
  • Foster caring, committed, and supportive relationships with students and families
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and care
  • Participate in professional development training related to Montessori and other educational initiatives
  • Design, prepare, and deliver learning experiences that facilitate authentic engagement and meet students where they are on their educational path
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet diverse student needs
  • Prepare reports, conduct parent-teacher conferences, and communicate with parents on an ongoing basis to foster an open and supportive relationship that our school is known and admired for
  • Model a strong work ethic, high standard of commitment, and maintain excellent professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students and parents
  • Participate in community building events, both in and rarely but sometimes, out of school hours
  • Promote and support the mission, vision and values of the school

Qualifications

Bachelor of Education, or equivalent
OR
Montessori Teaching Diploma

Additional Preferences (not required):
  • Montessori Teaching Diploma, or interest in pursing Montessori training
  • Interest or experience in discovery-based philosophies (e.g., Reggio, play-based)
  • 1-2 years teaching experience
  • Valid First Aid

Office Manager Job

The school has an AIM French program that students learn from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5.

This role reports directly to the Head of School. When the Head of School is unavailable, this role will connect with the Assistant Head of School or assigned Board of Directors designate. This role can also reach out to associated Board members if necessary. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for all administrative tasks related to both the South Okanagan Montessori School Society (SOMSS) and the Summerland Early Learning Centre (SELC), including supplies ordering and purchasing.
  • Responsible for semi-monthly payroll, benefit administration, tuition and fee collection, bank deposits, petty cash, and sick day tracking for the SELC. 
  • Responsible for interacting with parents and the public regarding questions related to school/daycare. 
  • Main phone support for incoming and outgoing calls for the school and daycare. 
  • Manage and track registration and waitlists for the SELC and School, in consultation with the Head of School.
  • Research, apply and follow up with all available grants and scholarships for SOMSS. 
  • Track and manage volunteer hours and issue notices of statements when required. 
  • Overseeing and assisting with the updating of the annual budgets for the Society, including the Summerland Montessori School (SMS) and the SELC in collaboration with the Head of School,  Bookkeeper, and Treasurer
  • Assists with monthly bookkeeping reconciliation.
  • Be a point person for the SELC, in partnership with an appointed Board of Directors Liaison
  • Administrative oversight of all SOMSS policies and procedures, ensures these are up to date and creates new ones as needed at the request of the Head of School and/or Board of Directors.
  • Review monthly SOMSS Board Meeting minutes. 
  • Human Resources support for the SOMSS team  
  • Keeps up with general licensing requirements for both the school and daycare
  • Provide support for SOMSS year-end, liaise with the Bookkeeper and Treasurer, as needed
  • Spreadsheet management and creation for cost comparisons, savings, etc, as needed
  • Participates and helps oversee any SOMSS strategic planning 
  • Other duties as assigned

There is potential for the role to evolve and grow (with appropriate compensation). Paid professional development opportunities may arise and will be considered with a submitted proposal and budget to the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, required
  • Post-Secondary Education is an asset
  • Experience is an asset, but not required
  • Proficient in Windows Office Applications (word, excel, etc)
  • Comfortable and confident with phone and email communication
  • Efficient in typing
  • Self-starter and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license with vehicle access 

Work Hours and Location:

  • Full-Time September to June (School Year) – 8:00am – 3:30pm
  • Part-Time/ Reduced Hours July and August  –  hours will be directed by Head of School
  • Location – On Site at the Summerland Montessori School 

Role Compensation + Benefits:

Hourly rang:e $23 – $25/hour based on experience

Benefits: SOMSS offers an optional, comprehensive Benefits package (Extended Health Care, Dental Care, Group Life Insurance) co-paid at 50% by the Employer (SOMSS) and 50% by the Employee (you), as well as an RRSP co-pay option. These options are available for employees who regularly work 20 hours per week or more. Tuition discounts for the SELC and school can be considered.
