TEACHER ~ Job Description

Summerland Montessori School is a non-profit independent school nestled in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in Summerland, British Columbia, just north of Penticton and within commuting distance of Kelowna to Oliver. Summerland Montessori School is a multi-age school, featuring small class sizes, ranging from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Summerland Montessori School is known for play-based learning, our strong sense of community, lots of outdoor fun, a collaborative culture, a commitment to professional development for our team, and meeting students where they are with their individual learning. The school has an AIM French program that students learn from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5.

 

We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated teachers. Our ideal candidates will have experience teaching elementary grades and an understanding of the Primary Program: A Framework for Teaching and the BC Early Learning Framework; developmental levels of children aged 4-10. Our school faculty has experience with the following training and/or certifications: Montessori, hands on learning, Reggio (play based learning). Candidates with prior experience or a strong interest in developing their skills in these teaching philosophies are highly encouraged to apply.

 

Joining our non-profit independent Montessori school team allows for more schedule flexibility than working within the public education system.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support the development of an inquiry-based, Montessori-focused approach to teaching and learning.
  • Foster caring, committed, and supportive relationships with students and families
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and care
  • Participate in professional development training related to Montessori and other educational initiatives
  • Design, prepare, and deliver learning experiences that facilitate authentic engagement and meet students where they are on their educational path
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet diverse student needs.
  • Prepare reports, conduct parent-teacher conferences, and communicate with parents on an ongoing basis to foster an open and supportive relationship that our school is known and admired for
  • Model a strong work ethic, high standard of commitment, and maintain excellent professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students and parents.
  • Participate in community building events, both in and out of school hours
  • Promote and support the mission, vision and values of the school.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Education

 

Additional Preferences (not required):
  • Montessori Teaching Diploma, or interest in pursuing Montessori training
  • Interest or experience in discovery-based philosophies (e.g., Reggio, play-based)
  • 1-2 years teaching experience
  • Valid First Aid

Education Assistant Job Description

Summerland Montessori School is a non-profit independent school nestled in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in Summerland, British Columbia. Summerland Montessori School is a multi-age school raging from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Summerland Montessori School is known for play-based learning, our strong sense of community, lots of outdoor fun, a collaborative culture, a commitment to professional development for our team, and meeting students where they are with their individual learning. The school has an AIM French program that students learn from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5.
 
We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Education Assistants. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Head of School or designate, and the guidance of teachers. The Education Assistant provides classroom support for students.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide classroom support in collaboration with teachers, the principal/ vice-principal and the school-based team.
  • Foster caring, committed, and supportive relationships with students and families
  • Assist students in the development of effective academic and social, emotional and behavioural strategies.
  • Monitor student progress through the collection of objective data as requested.
  • Implement adaptations and modifications as outlined in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Utilize technology to support student learning.
  • Participate in professional development training related to Montessori and other educational initiatives
  • Model a strong work ethic, high standard of commitment, and maintain excellent professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students and parents
  • Attend meetings and/or accompany students on field trips as requested.
  • Participate in community building events, both in and out of school hours
  • Promote and support the mission, vision and values of the school
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education Assistant diploma
  • At least four months recent and successful experience working with K-5 children in structured programs or school settings.
Additional Preferences
  • 1-2 years experience
  • Valid First Aid

About the Summerland Early Learning Centre (SELC)

The Summerland Early Learning Centre is a fully enrolled licensed childcare facility. We believe that children are naturally curious and active participants in their learning journey. Our teachers facilitate learning through discovery and nurture a love of learning by providing children with an engaging environment carefully selected to guide learning outcomes. Learning is a journey of inquiry, a constantly evolving process that interconnects children with their environment and the people in it. Our program of activities incorporates a flexible Preschool Curriculum that fosters holistic, interconnected learning through play. Our qualified and experienced educators create learning activities and environments that encourage children to construct their own knowledge of concepts through their active experiences of play. These play experiences cover a wide spectrum of learning and development in areas such as creative art, drama, literacy, numeracy, social, cultural, environmental, science, construction, music and physical literacy. Our program of activities focuses on encouraging the holistic development of the growing child (physical, intellectual, creative, emotional, social, intellectual and language).

The Summerland Early Learning Centre is part of the South Okanagan Montessori Society (SOMSS). SOMSS is a non-profit society that oversees the operations of the SELC and the Summerland Montessori School.

Job description

Our dedicated non-profit society is looking for a qualified ECE or ECEA to work at our centre, located in the beautiful Okanagan Valley town of Summerland, BC.
