Elementary School Teacher

Candidates with prior experience or a strong interest in developing their skills in these teaching philosophies are highly encouraged to apply. Joining our non-profit independent Montessori school team allows for more schedule flexibility than working within the public education system.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Setting up and running a split Kindergarten / Grade One classroom
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to support the development of an inquiry-based, Montessori-focused approach to teaching and learning
- Foster caring, committed, and supportive relationships with students and families
- Create a classroom environment that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and care
- Participate in professional development training related to Montessori and other educational initiatives
- Design, prepare, and deliver learning experiences that facilitate authentic engagement and meet students where they are on their educational path
- Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet diverse student needs
- Prepare reports, conduct parent-teacher conferences, and communicate with parents on an ongoing basis to foster an open and supportive relationship that our school is known and admired for
- Model a strong work ethic, high standard of commitment, and maintain excellent professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students and parents
- Participate in community building events, both in and rarely but sometimes, out of school hours
- Promote and support the mission, vision and values of the school
Qualifications
- Montessori Teaching Diploma, or interest in pursing Montessori training
- Interest or experience in discovery-based philosophies (e.g., Reggio, play-based)
- 1-2 years teaching experience
- Valid First Aid
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary $50,000-$53,000, or negotiable based on experience and schedule availability

Part-Time After School Program Assistant
The After School Program teachers develop engaging activities for school age children to participate in after they have completed their school day. As an after school teacher you are required to have a Responsible Adult (see explanation below) status and be passionate about working with children. Your role is crucial in providing a healthy, safe and engaging environment for school age children to enjoy at the end of what seems to them a long school day. The After School Program runs from 3 pm – 5:30 pm Monday to Friday.
As a Licensed Child Care Facility, we are regulated by the BC Child Care Licensing Regulation
which governs required employee credentials:
- Responsible Adult: Requires an employee to be at least 19 years of age, have relevant work experience and completed a course or a combination of courses of at least 20 hours duration in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe, aesthetic and creative environment that meets current Child Care Licensing requirements
- Plan and implement fun and engaging activities
- Utilize appropriate positive guidance strategies according to the SELC and SMS behavioural guidance and discipline policies
- Monitors student attendance of the program by collecting daily attendance.
- Coordinate snack and daily outdoor activities.
- Communicate with families, other staff and superiors in a timely and professional manner.
- Assists in other capacities as determine by the SELC manager and/or Head of School.
- Performs related duties as required and in alignment with all SELC and SMS policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Responsible adult course
- Valid First Aid certificate
Wage + Benefits:
- Hourly range: To be discussed, generally $18.50-$20/hour

*Benefits: SOMSS offers an optional, comprehensive Benefits package (Extended Health Care, Dental Care, Group Life Insurance) co-paid at 50% by the Employer (SOMSS) and 50% by the Employee (you), as well as an RRSP co-pay option. These options are available for employees who regularly work 20 hours per week or more.
