Our students study academic subjects that meet or exceed the objectives as directed by provincial outlines. We believe that strong minds are supported by strong bodies. Our students are provided the opportunity to enjoy daily physical education and daily French immersion. In accordance with Montessori learning philosophies, each student is encouraged and supported through their learning needs, at their respective individual speeds. Our dedicated teachers are happy to meet with parents to discuss their child’s progress at any time throughout the year.
We believe that children are naturally curious and active participants in their learning journey, constructing their knowledge of concepts through their engaging experiences of play. Our qualified and experienced educators create learning activities and environments to foster holistic development (physical, intellectual, creative, emotional, social, language) while presenting concepts from art, literacy, numeracy, science, social, environmental, music , physical literacy and more. Our philosophy is based on discovery and inquiry, using the child’s natural curiosity to facilitate a love of learning.

The school strives to teach children according to their own ability and not according to their chronological age. This philosophy has allowed the students of the Elementary Program to perform exceptionally well on the government issued Foundation Skills Assessment tests and has permitted graduates of our program the opportunity to experience success in the local middle schools if they transfer at Grade 6. Many of our students choose to enter French Immersion programs at the middle school due to the tremendous French introduction they receive at SMS.
At the Summerland Montessori School we believe the world is our classroom and for this reason we participate in many field trips throughout the year, including visiting local senior facilities to learn from our elders and give back to our community. In an effort to encourage healthy lifetime skills, swimming and skating are taught throughout the school year, as well as daily activities and other team sports. The students not only interact with students in their own class, but with the other grades as well, thanks to our House Teams and peer teaching programs.
SMS understands that music and art are critical to the well-rounded development of our children’s education.
